At the foot of l ’ Etna
Tuesday 24 November - Giardini Naxos
It is at dusk as we approach Naxos Giardini, our last step before the Greece. The Bay is deserted with a few trawlers to dock. We have the choice to find the best place where to put the anchor. Once asked anchor, We draw on in market back to ensure it is well planted... and then surprise, the starboard motor stops dry down...! then the gauge indicates that there are at least 25 litres. Gauge port indicates the same level... we had hot!The bad weather is announced and we cannot stay without the possibility to start the motors. Night has fallen when we put the annex to water and Philippe goes ashore with three empty cans. By luck of the fishermen, who speak English, offer to take him to the nearest pump, which is more than a kilometer. Once onsite, they have mercy and bring him back to the port. We can sleep easy
Fishermen have confirmed that it will do no good out the next few days and even they, Despite their large trawler, will stay in port.
We have therefore a few days to explore the area and visit the hyper-touristique city of Taormina.
At daybreak the day we discover that surrounds us with Taormina to the North...
and Etna South.
Thursday 25 November - Taormina
Today, visit of Taormina. The old "picturesque" city and the ancient theater including the first stones dates from the 3rd century BC.
The city bus takes us to the village along the coast, then by a winding road on the hillside among the most luxurious hotels than the others.
Great views of the Bay of Naxos - Etna and Giardini. We can even monitor Tao which is the only boat in the Bay. There is no crowd in the narrow streets lined with orange trees... not a tourist in sight nor premises also... It's time for the NAP apparently and the few stores remaining open winter reopen until 4: 00 or 5: 00 pm.
Then towards the Roman theatre which is a must. It is the largest theatre Greco Roman after that of Syracuse. Its construction began 300 years BC...
Philippe wanted to visit ancient ruins. We do not regret!!! The site is beautiful, and...
the place is spectacular, with views of Mount Etna and the East coast of Sicily.
Photo souvenir taken quickly, all these bricks embedded with each other, appear not very stable!
We meet funny characters and funny critters... original Œuvres of Piccolo and Grudda, entitled "Fantasie Visionarie" – Bronze statuettes.
It was not expected to find sculptures also modern ruins more of 2000 years, But why not!!!
We expect the good weather window to cap on the Greece....
Superb landscapes, how lucky to have seen these ruins.
