Greek treasure
Among the restored ruins of a theatre Greco-Romain Nathalie discovers talents of 'great' singer'... and we are not among the Lilliputians!
Thursday 10 December: Gulf of Amvrakia
Soon 15 the days that we are in Greece and we have not really visited antiques...
The island of Antipaxos we are not very far from the famous ruins of Nikopolis, located near the city of Preveza on the mainland coast. Nikopolis (City of victory) built by the Roman Emperor Augustus to commemorate his victory over Antony and Cleopatra in the naval battle of Actium -. 31 AV. J.C. Okay this will be Roman ruins... relatively recent.
We decide to go for a bit of 'cultural' tourism. Night falls when we ask the anchor by a few meters of water in an inlet of the Gulf of Amvrakia
Friday 11 December: Nikopolis
It is a foggy weather, rainy and cold that we arrive in the Bay of Salaora. We disembark in annex small camber well protected from the swell, where a few fishing boats are moored in the rocks. Not a cat land, a few rather timid dogs barking to the principle...
We follow a path which joins the main road. No sign indicates the direction of Nikopolis, but Philip, who has the meaning of the guidance concludes that we are on the right path... and he is right... once again
We come finally to the walls of the archaeological site which is mesh and completely desert. We push our curiosity along the ruins, determined to find the main entrance to the theatre.
Our surprise there's of the world across the site. People on scaffolding consolidate pieces of walls ready to collapse while others work to pick up the debris and plastics that lurking everywhere.
We have the chance , the archaeologist responsible for the site anthropologist is there. We are the first visitors and it seems surprised that "tourists" come in winter to visit places...
It is thanks to European funds they could restore a small part of the site, It is a gigantic work. He explains that from here the end of week site close. They cannot resume their work unless you obtain new financial aid European and it could take years.
He is proud to show us what he and his team have done, but we feel that it is a little frustrated not being able to continue the work.
We continue our way to the walls of the city of Nikopolis and the many buildings that have been restored. There again we meet the responsible archaeologist of the site.
The theatre is Greco Romain is in better condition than the previous, Since next summer it will be open to the public for cultural events.
Nathalie has finished its hearing, the crowd applauds...
End of the visit... We travelled a lot of kilometres below the greyness and crossed for history enthusiasts. We regret not to have made the trip and learned a lot about the history of the Greece.
Saturday 12 December: Preveza
Small quiet navigation in the Gulf of Amvrakia (inland sea) to reach its mouth and the city of Preveza. The harbour is well protected, a few docks hard, not sanitary, desert streets... not much of interest, but it is the opportunity to somewhat fill the refrigerator. Caulked in their boats, We see a few Swedish crews, German and English waiting days to resume the sea... yet 3 months of waiting!
The Sun came back with a pleasant temperature day, but the surrounding mountains are covered with snow and the mercury falls into a tailspin in late afternoon. Is that down more to the South it will make more hot... We believe
