Turks and Caicos: Lagoons of sight!
Monday 10 April – After 4 days at sea we arrive at the Turks and Caicos. We aim the Cockburn Town on Grand Turk island where we do our entry and get a permit of navigation for a week...
On the way fishing is good and after taking three dorados dolphinfish are rods.
The freezer is full we try to salt one of the bream. 48 hours in salt by emptying the water regularly, then drying in the Sun. Looks like salt cod.
Grand Turk is on the road of cruise ships and every day 2 or 3 floating hotels stop. Beach comes alive as soon as one of them accosts. Everything is ready to welcome thousands of tourists come to relax in the sun loungers perfectly aligned and SIP a lil glass in paddling. Behind the beach is Disneyland style with esplanade lined with shops... Everything we love!
Quickly we lift anchor until the Sun is too low and leave this world of noise and consumption...
To wet across the lagoon behind a reef that protects us from the swell of the sea.
Wednesday 12 April: Caicos
Quiet navigation through the channel between the Turks and the Caicos
Anchorage behind Big Fish Cay island where sea eagles nest. Even from this distance we hear the chirp of small whenever the parents go fishing.
Friday 14 April: Crossing of the Caicos Bank
40 miles of sailing under sail to more of 6 nodes and by 3 to 5 metres of water... To do a permanent watch very carefully to avoid potatoes of coral. Fortunately the Sun is high and they are visible for several hundred meters.
We arrive on French Cay on the southern edge of the lagoon. The sight of this wreck is the signal to go sail and proceed with caution to the engine. We attached swim above several reefs.... but the funds are very disappointing.
Saturday 15 April: Providenciales
A strong wind is announced and it is more of 8 nodes that we retraversons the lagoon to shelter us South of the islands of Providenciales.
It's Easter weekend and formalities of exit from the country take us two days. Fortunately the radar station operators of Providenciales go hunting for us officials and organize appointments. The immigration officer makes us pay exit fees more overhead for holiday... we say "Goodbye", because there is no formality. In addition he refuses to stamp our passports - the tone rises and doors slamming! The next day we threaten to make an official claim with the Directorate of immigration... and the same officer returned to reimburse us! The customs officer gives us go to the beach and everything happens quickly in accordance with the regulation.
Sunday 16 April: Farewell the Turks & Caicos
It's no regrets that we leave this archipelago who won't let us a Blue Lagoon... no more memory!
Last edge in the lagoon.... Cuba is in front of us.
The crossing is quick and we have to trim down in order to reach the dawn in Santiago. Since our passage in 2012 the docks were repainted, but the cement factory still spits his yellow smoke. The Welcome to the radio is warm...
