We leave in the direction of Tahanea Gambier, an atoll of the Tuamotus located 700miles about. We make sure to get day in the past of Otao in the East of the island.
Tahanea is 'heaven'... No inhabitants only a keeper ( Since 1 year) who lives on the outskirts of the past of Otao and records the sailboats on arrival.
14 April 2019: Tahanea
Navigation in the lagoon is to view, as in many atolls where reefs are not mapped. We find Pascal and Martine( Asterix to the respondents ) in the part East of the lagoon. The location is ideal for walking on the reef flat and pick up clams and periwinkles.
Leslie and Vaughan (Off 2 C) our friends "kiwis" joining us later in the South where we are wet in the face of a dense Coconut Grove...
that promises to be full of kaveu (coconut crab).
The same evening equipped with frontal, pants and shirt (to avoid mosquitoes) Philip catches in no time 4 beautiful crabs that we taste the next day with a home-made mayonnaise!
It's so good that we return several times carefully to catch that the biggest.
We enjoy excellent weather for exploring the northern part of the lagoon with Asterix.
Not easy to find a sandy area to anchor – potatoes are everywhere. To avoid that the chain won't "to twist" or "Blade" on the reefs Philippe hangs on the channel a few buoys distanced of few meters.
Before start of Tahanea we last anchor to the past of Motupuapua which will allow us to go at night to the island of Fakarava we know already from the time of Hibiscus.
25 April 2019: Fakarava
The pass South of Fakarava is part of 7 classified areas 'Reserve of the biosphere by UNESCO'. It is known for the richness of the seabed. Every year in June July of thousands of groupers come to breed in the Tumakohua pass to the South. Added to this phenomenon is the presence of gray reef sharks who assemble in nocturnal hunts . Don't miss the documentaries " 700 sharks in the night"and"Reproduction of grouper".
In November 2014 Philippe had plunged repeatedly in the past to watch grey sharks very close.
wet in the face of the Pakokota at Matthew and Agnes lodge...
that same evening welcome a French family on holiday. We sympathize during a dinner ashore and Vaughan ( Off2C) offers to take them by boat to the South pass for a unforgettable snorkeling. Good morning, We ship all over Off2C and spend the night in the wetting of Herifa close to the past and organize a barbecue on the beach with mosquitoes...
The next day at 9 in the annex we proceed outward from the past and we let ourselves drift with the current taking turns annex. Difficult to take photos the weather is gray, but we remember all the wonderful fish and sharks not really interested in our presence.
