The treasures of the South Island (2Part I)- The Lake District a haven of peace
We are in the heart of the lakes all located in beautiful settings whose purity of light and intensity of colors we will never forget.
Our route
Lake Tekapo far from any civilization stretches over a length of 25 kms. It is bordered by mountains and fed by glaciers that give it an intense turquoise blue color..
The sky of Lake Tekapo is one of the most beautiful in the world for stargazing. The sky is part of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve which means that the sky is protected and controlled in order to avoid light pollution.. Reasons why there are no major cities around, nor a multitude of lights in the village which has about 650 inhabitants.
Lake Tekapo
We stay a few nights at the Holiday Park campsite to discover the lake from all angles.
Hiking trail to Mt John Observatory on the west shore of Lake Tekapo.
Mt John Observatory.
Walks around McGregor and Alexandrina Lakes west of Tekapo Lake.
We stay several days in an Aibnb a few kilometers from Twizel. Located in "open countryside" it is a good starting point to explore other lakes and hike Mount Cook.
